I love to splurge on a good dessert, and I’ve found that when something is truly delicious, a few spoonfuls are often all I need to feel satisfied.
This pots-de-crème–style dessert has long been my go-to when we’re having company. It’s easy to make and looks lovely served in small, stemmed dishes. Plus, who can resist a little chocolate at the end of a meal?
But after making this easy low-calorie chocolate hazelnut mousse, I may have a new favorite. My husband raved about it. His only complaint was that I didn’t make enough.

Ingredients & Substitutions
- Chocolate Hazelnut Spread – Nutella gives this mousse its signature flavor. Other chocolate hazelnut spreads will work, but sweetness and texture may vary.
- Light Tub-Style Cream Cheese – Adds creaminess and structure. Be sure it’s at room temperature so it blends smoothly.
- Fat-Free Cream Cheese – Keeps the mousse lighter while still contributing to a rich texture. If you can’t find fat-free cream cheese, low-fat works well.
- No-Calorie Sweetener – Adds sweetness without extra calories. Add gradually and adjust to taste. Granulated sugar or powdered sugar can be used instead, though points will change.
- Low-Fat Milk – Helps loosen the mixture so it blends smoothly. Any milk you normally use will work.
- Hazelnut Extract – Enhances the Nutella flavor. Vanilla extract is a good substitute if you don’t have hazelnut extract on hand.
- Light Whipped Topping – Folded in at the end to give the mousse its light, airy texture. Be gentle so it stays fluffy.

How to Make Nutella Mousse, Step-by-Step
Step 1: Gather and prepare all ingredients.

Step 2: Add the chocolate hazelnut spread and cream cheese to a large bowl. Beat with an electric mixer (affiliate link) until combined.
Step 3: Beat in the sweetener, milk and hazelnut extract until smooth. **See note below.
Step 4: Add the whipped topping, a half cup at a time, and gently fold in with spatula or wooden spoon (affiliate link) (do not beat in or the mouse will be too dense).

Step 5: Divide into four serving dishes. Chill for 30 minutes or until ready to serve.

Recipe Notes
**I used just one packet of sweetener, but I recommend adding it gradually and tasting as you go.
If you don’t have hazelnut extract, vanilla extract works well.
For a deeper flavor, replace one tablespoon of the milk with cold brewed coffee.

Serving Suggestions
