Why I Love These Hawaiian Meatballs

  • Just five simple ingredients
  • Minimal prep
  • Sweet-and-savory flavor
  • Great for weeknights or gatherings
  • Easy to portion and reheat

Ingredients and Substitutions

  • Turkey meatballs – Frozen, fully cooked turkey meatballs keep this recipe simple. Homemade meatballs work too.
  • Crushed pineapple (with juice) – Adds natural sweetness and helps create the sauce.
  • Thick teriyaki basting sauce – Provides savory depth. A thinner teriyaki sauce may result in a looser sauce.
  • Instant tapioca – Thickens the sauce as it cooks. Cornstarch slurry can be used instead.
  • Green bell pepper – Adds color and freshness. Red, orange or yellow peppers work as well.

How to Make Easy Slow Cooker Hawaiian Meatballs

Ideal slow cooker size: 2- to 4-Quart.

  1. Add meatballs to the slow cooker.
  2. Stir together pineapple (with juice), teriyaki sauce, and tapioca.
  3. Pour over meatballs.
  4. Cook on LOW 6–8 hours or HIGH 3–4 hours.
  5. Stir in green pepper and cook on HIGH 20 minutes more.
  6. Adjust sauce consistency with a little water if needed.

Recipe Notes

Using frozen turkey meatballs keeps this recipe truly five ingredients and very low effort.

For best results, use a thick teriyaki-style basting sauce rather than a thin marinade.

Serve over brown rice, cauliflower rice, or with roasted vegetables.

To keep things super simple, I used frozen low fat turkey meatballs. You could always make them from scratch if you prefer.
For the best flavor you’ll want to use a thick teriyaki basting sauce.

          1. Is ‘Kikkoman Teriyaki Baste & Glaze’ the same as ‘Kikkoman Marinade and Sauce’? If not can I use them interchangeably?

  1. Have made several times. We all enjoy this one. Have made quite a few of your recipes and they are always good. Thank you!

  2. These look delicious! Just curious, about how many meatballs in a pound and therefore as you have stated, a serving size would be 1/6. Thanks.

    1. Hi Susan,

That will depend on the size of your meatballs. There is definitely variation from brand to brand. You’ll want to count the total number of meatballs you place in the cooker and then divide that number by 6 to tell you how many in one serving. Sorry I can’t be more specific than that. I try to count and measure the food I post here before we begin eating it but failed to do it this time. Sorry about that.
