I discovered these in Darina Allen’s wonderful cookbook Easy Entertaining (affiliate link), and the moment I saw them I knew I had to make them. Three ingredients, no baking, and they look like something you’d find in a fancy Easter basket. I was sold immediately.
What I love most is that they bring together two of my favorite things: Rice Krispie treats and Cadbury mini eggs. The dark chocolate-coated cereal makes a perfect little nest, and those pastel candy-coated eggs nestled in the center are just about the most cheerful thing I can think of to put on an Easter dessert table. Kids go absolutely crazy for them — and so do the grown-ups standing nearby pretending they aren’t interested.
I used a combination of Cadbury Milk Chocolate and Royal Dark Chocolate Mini Eggs for mine, since that’s what I had tucked away in the pantry. Any candy-coated mini chocolate eggs work beautifully.

- Rice Krispies cereal — 4½ cups. The classic works perfectly here. No substitutions needed, though puffed rice cereal is a fine swap.
- Cadbury mini eggs — 3 per nest, 72 total. The candy shell holds up beautifully and the colors are perfect for Easter. Any candy-coated mini chocolate eggs work. How to Make Chocolate Easter Egg Nests, Step by Step
Step 1: Melt the chocolate
Place the chopped chocolate in a microwave (affiliate link)-safe bowl. Microwave (affiliate link) at 50% power for 1 minute, then remove and stir well. The chocolate may not look melted yet — that’s normal. Return to the microwave and continue heating in 10–20 second intervals at 50% power, stirring after each, until only small lumps remain. Remove and keep stirring until completely smooth. Don’t rush this — chocolate scorches easily, and there’s no fixing it once it does.
Step 2: Stir in the Rice Krispies
Add the Rice Krispies to the melted chocolate and stir until every piece is evenly coated.
Step 3: Shape the nests
Divide the mixture evenly among 24 paper muffin cups. Use the back of a spoon or your fingertip to press a small well into the center of each one — this is the “nest” where the eggs will sit.
Step 4: Add the eggs
Place 3 Cadbury mini eggs into the center of each nest.
Step 5: Let them set
Leave the nests at room temperature until the chocolate is firm, about 20–30 minutes. You can speed this up by placing them in the refrigerator for 10–15 minutes.
Tips for Success
- Melt chocolate low and slow. Use 50% microwave power and stop to stir frequently. Chocolate holds its shape as it melts in the microwave, so it can look unmelted while actually being close to done — always stir before deciding it needs more time.
- Work quickly once the chocolate is melted. It starts to set as it cools, so have your muffin cups ready before you add the Rice Krispies.
- Press the well in while the mixture is still warm. Once the chocolate starts to set, shaping becomes difficult.
- Use standard-size muffin cups, not mini. Mini liners don’t give you enough room for 3 eggs and look crowded.
Storing
Store the finished nests in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the refrigerator for up to a week. If refrigerating, let them come to room temperature for a few minutes before serving — the chocolate is better at room temp than straight from the fridge. These also freeze well for up to a month; store in a single layer or separate layers with parchment paper.
