I love making this simple apple pear compote whenever I have extra fruit on hand. Fresh apples and pears simmered with a little lemon and cinnamon until tender, then I mash them and add just enough honey and maple syrup for natural sweetness.

Because most of the flavor comes from the fruit itself, this compote is healthy, WW friendly, and low in points. I have been enjoying it all week long—on top of oatmeal, stirred into yogurt, and even warmed up over a scoop of frozen yogurt for dessert.

  • Pears – ripe pears make this compote naturally sweet. Bartlett, Bosc, or Anjou are all good choices.
  • Water – just enough to help the fruit soften as it cooks.
  • Fresh lemon juice – brightens the flavor and helps keep the fruit from turning brown.
  • Ground cinnamon – adds a warm, cozy flavor that makes this fruit compote taste like fall.
  • Honey – for natural sweetness. You can cut back or leave it out if your fruit is especially sweet.
  • Maple syrup – gives depth of flavor and a hint of caramel-like sweetness. Swap in more honey or use a sugar-free syrup if you prefer.

How to Make this Simple Apple Pear Compote Step by Step

Step 1: Prep the fruit. I start by peeling, coring, and chopping the apples and pears into bite-sized chunks. The smaller you cut them, the quicker they’ll cook down.

Step 2: Combine the ingredients. Add the apples, pears, water, lemon juice, and cinnamon to a medium saucepan.

Step3: Cook until tender. Cover the pan and cook over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the fruit softens and begins to break down. This usually takes about 15–20 minutes.

Step 4: Mash the fruit. Once tender, I use a potato masher (affiliate link) to crush the fruit into a chunky compote. If you prefer it smoother, you can use an immersion blender (affiliate link).

Step 5: Sweeten to taste. Remove from the heat and stir in the honey and maple syrup. Taste and adjust the sweetness to your liking.

Step 6: Cool and enjoy. You can serve the compote warm right away or let it cool and refrigerate for later.

Recipe Notes

The inspiration for this apple pear compote came from Mireille Guiliano’s book French Women Don’t Get Fat. I have always loved her emphasis on freshness, balance, and pleasure with food. It reminded me that something as simple as gently cooked fruit can feel special and satisfying without being complicated.

I like to double the recipe so I have plenty on hand all week. It keeps well in the fridge and the flavor actually gets better after a day or two. If you want to make it even lighter for WW, you can reduce the honey and maple syrup, or swap in a sugar-free sweetener.

Feel free to experiment with different apple and pear varieties—each one gives the compote its own flavor twist. Sometimes I also add a pinch of nutmeg or ginger for extra warmth.

Pear Apple Compote Recipe

A simple pear and apple compote lightly sweetened with honey and/or maple syrup you can use a variety of ways.

Ingredients 

  • 2 pounds apples
  • 1-1/2 pounds pears
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 small lemon, juiced
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons honey, or to taste
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup, or to taste

Instructions 

  • Peel, core and chop the apples and pears into 1/2-inch chunks.
  • Place the chopped apples and pears in a medium-large saucepan. Add the water, lemon juice and cinnamon.
  • Cover and cook over medium-low heat until tender, 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent the fruit from sticking and/or burning.
  • With a potato masher (affiliate link) crush the fruit coarsely while continuing to cook until the excess water evaporates, about 5 minutes.
