I love taking a classic ham salad and giving it a lighter, more flavorful twist! I finely chop cooked ham and mix it with a bit of onion, tangy mustard, and a touch of sweet mango chutney for the perfect balance of flavors. Instead of heavy mayo, I use a combination of light mayonnaise and non-fat Greek yogurt to keep it creamy and satisfying without weighing it down.
It is delicious on a sandwich, spread on crackers, or piled onto crisp lettuce leaves for a fresh, protein-packed meal. However I serve it, this low fat ham salad always hits the spot!

Ham salad is one of my favorite ways to use up the leftover bits from a baked ham. It makes a great sandwich filling for rye bread or small rolls or a tasty topping for crackers and cucumber slices, which is the way I enjoyed it for lunch today.
The inspiration for this ham salad recipe comes from The Fannie Farmer Cookbook (affiliate link), my go-to cookbook when I’m seeking old-fashioned comfort.
I lightened it up by using a combination of light mayonnaise and non-fat Greek yogurt in place of the full fat mayo called for, with good results.

Ingredients
- Chopped cooked ham – Any lean ham will work. I most often make this when I have leftover spiral cut ham, but deli ham will work too.
- Grated onion – You could also use finely chopped scallion or shallot if you prefer.
- Mustard – I most often have dijon mustard in the fridge, but feel free to use whatever mustard you prefer.
- Chutney – a savory condiment made from slow-cooked fruits or vegetables, vinegar, and spices. Originating from India, chutneys have traveled the globe, and every country has its own take on this versatile condiment. Chutneys from South Africa often include apricots, while British chutneys favor using apples. I like Major Grey’s, a mango chutney that combines chunks of sweet mangos with ginger, garlic, chili flakes, and vinegar.
- Light mayonnaise – a lighter, lower point option to full fat mayonnaise.
- Plain non-fat Greek yogurt – A zero point option that when combined with light mayonnaise creates a delightful creamy binder for this salad.
Recipe Variations:
- Spicier: Mix the 1 cup chopped ham with 1 tablespoon light mayo, 2 tablespoons non-fat Greek yogurt, 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish, and 1 tablespoon mustard instead of the ingredients specified above.
- Sweet & Tangy: Substitute 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish for the 1 tablespoon chutney and omit the mustard.
