I first learned about this incredibly simple banana “ice cream” at a Weight Watchers workshop many years ago, when it was all the rage. I love bananas and almost always have them stashed in the freezer, so I’m not sure why it took me so long to give it a try.
But now that I have finally made it, I can say this little hack really is as good as everyone claims—sweet, creamy, silky, and shockingly satisfying for something made from just one ingredient.
Whenever my bananas turn spotty, I peel them, toss them into a zip-top bag, and freeze them. Usually they end up in smoothies, but lately they’ve been going straight into the food processor (affiliate link) to make this delicious frozen treat.

How to Make 1-Ingredient Banana Ice Cream
Step 1: Freeze the bananas
Peel ripe bananas, slice if desired, and freeze in a bag or container.
Step 2: Blend
Add frozen bananas to a food processor or high-powered blender (affiliate link).
Blend until smooth, stopping to scrape down the sides as needed.
Continue blending until the mixture is thick, creamy, and soft-serve-like.
A Yonanas (affiliate link) frozen dessert maker also works great for this.
Step 3: Serve or freeze
Enjoy immediately as soft-serve, or freeze for a firmer, scoopable texture.
If it gets too firm, let it soften at room temperature for 5 to 10 minutes before serving

Recipe Notes
It still amazes me how just a few minutes in the food processor turns frozen bananas into something so rich and silky. The natural sweetness and starches really mimic ice cream without feeling heavy.
A few tips:
- If you want thicker texture, freeze longer after blending.
- If blending with other frozen fruit, you may need a splash of milk or yogurt for consistency.
- If you struggle with portion control, be mindful—bananas are healthy, but easy to overdo.
Variations
There are tons of fun ways to change this up. A few ideas:
- Banana Nut Crunch
Add chopped almonds or walnuts for texture. - Banana Chocolate Chip
Stir in 2 tablespoons mini chocolate chips. - Peanut Butter Banana
Add 1 tablespoon PB to the blender. - Banana Mango
Blend 2 cups frozen mango with the bananas and 1/4 cup milk. - Berry Banana
Blend with frozen strawberries or blueberries.
Serving Suggestions
- Enjoy as soft-serve right from the blender
- Re-freeze and scoop like traditional ice cream
- Top with berries, nuts, or a dusting of cocoa
- Blend into a smoothie for breakfast

I have been making chocolate peanut butter banana ice cream – I do 5 bananas, 2 tbsp PB2 and 2 tbsp dutch processed cocoa powder. Super rich and creamy!
That sounds delicious Lisa. Thanks for sharing!
sounds yummy! how many points?
Thank you for your meal plan I made the turkey meatloaf last week and loved it. I sliced it and froze it so I have lots of meals made ahead. Thanks, Linda
Hi my name is Kathy I love blueberry are they only zero points if I eat a cup of them or can I eat more then a cup and they are still zero very confused thank you
Just this past week we learned in WW that if you blend/process a fruit such as the banana, you then must count the points for the fruit as you didn’t digest it yourself. Therefore the seemingly 0 pt. banana is now 5 points!!
Hi Lisa, Actually according to WW Recipe Builder, The points are only counted if you blend them into a beverage that you drink. At least that’s the guideline right now ๐ Hope this helps.
Simple and healthy recipe!
How does a banana which is 0PP suddenly turn into 2PP when frozen and blended?
Hi Nicola, as I said in my post…
“…This is the kind of food you need to be careful of. It can be really easy to over-indulge in something that seems innocent – like frozen bananas. While it’s possible to lose weight eating a banana or two a day, it gets near impossible if you’re eating them by the bunch. (For me, anyway ๐ ) So, I would allow myself one serving a day for 0 points plus, after that I’d count the points (which is about 2 for 1/4th of this recipe).” The more you hang out in the world of WW the more you realize, everyone counts points differently. “Abuse of fruit” can be a problem for WW trying to lose weight. Hope this helps.
I know this post is old but agree…If you eat 3000 calories a day in fruit you are not going to lose weight plain and simple.
Thanks Rgina!
