Did you know you can buy fruits and vegetables at the 99 Cents Store? I didn't until Mom kept mentioning it and sharing with me some of her scores.
But for some reason, I was still hesitant about the whole thing for some reason. The 99 Cents Store is where I tend to go for cheap gift bags, cleaning supplies and the occasional canned goods, NOT fruits and vegetables.
So, Sunday after yoga I decided to drop in and check it out for myself. And boy was I pleasantly surprised by the abundant selection.
Check out what I found:
- Artisan lettuce
- Grape tomatoes
- 2 pounds of carrots
- Sliced mushrooms
- Earthbound Farm organic Italian salad blend
- Persian cucumbers
- Baby potatoes (that I forgot to include in the photo)
Truthfully, I had to contain myself, to stop from buying more than I could use in the next several days. (Fruits and vegetables that get tossed into the trash are never a bargain.)
Vegetables I left for a future trip included broccoli slaw mix, angle hair cole slaw, shredded carrots, shredded red cabbage, microwavable bags of broccoli, cauliflower and carrots, mini peppers, portabella mushrooms, and lots lots more. Many of the items are the same brands I've seen at Sprouts, Safeway and Basha's.
Everything was fresh and well within its expiration date.
One of the big challenges of eating healthier can be the expense. Fresh fruits and vegetables can be pricey, especially when they're out of season. But by eating what's in season, what's on sale and seeking out bargains at places like the 99 Cents Stores it's possible to eat more fruits and vegetables without blowing the budget.
Trips to the 99 Cents Store are going to become part of my regular shopping rotation.
Have you ever shopped for fruits and vegetables at the 99 Cents Store? Do you have other favorite strategies for buying fruits and vegetables on the cheap?

Many times the fruits and vegetables from 99 cent store are deformed? Not as symmetrical as you get in regular store. Sems like exposed to overdose of radiation? Why they have such quality, I don't know.
