Today I'm dropping in with a quick tip for help with managing cravings that I have been using for years.
Though simple, it will require some practice because a change in your thinking and self talk is required.
Because this approach has been very effective for me when I came across this video with Vanessa Perrone explaining why it is so effective I knew it was time to share...
A Simple Tip to Help Manage Cravings
Notes From the Video on Managing Your Cravings:
This tip is designed to help manage cravings for food that come from an impulse or emotion, not real physical hunger. Like when you find yourself opening the fridge right after dinner or opening up your lunch box before hours ahead of lunch time.
The next time you are experiencing hunger that is not physical, hunger that is emotional, that is coming from your head or your heart, instead of trying to fight it with negative self talk...
"That's bad Vanessa," "You can't have that Vanessa," "Don't eat that Vanessa," "You shouldn't have that Vanessa," do something just the opposite.
Tell yourself you can have it later. Give yourself permission to have it later... wait ten minutes.
Pause and have a drink of water or pop a piece of gum.
There are two reason that this 10 minute rule works.
First, cravings like emotions come in waves waves. They start slowly, get more intense and peak, and then they subside. If you are able to ride it out it they will often go away.
Second, it is important to adopt more of a permission mindset rather than a restriction mindset around food. The restriction mindset, you can't have that, makes the food more alluring, and makes us want to break the rule.
Giving yourself permission, but with delay creates space to allow you to think about it and realize that food is abundant and available. It takes the power away of food when you can have it anytime. The time delay gives you an opportunity to check in with yourself to assess whether you really want it.
So, the next time a craving strikes, try this 10 minute rule and see how it works.
I have discovered that often I get busy and totally forget about whatever it is I thought I just had to have a few minutes earlier.
