When I read Dr. Weil's Weekly Bulletin about Losing Weight After Menopause, I couldn't help but smile and then let out a HUGE sigh of relief.
You see, I've been fretting about menopause for several years now. It all started when we moved to northern Wisconsin, where the average age is at least 10 years older than me. I started hanging out more with post-menopausal women, who openly shared the difficulties they had experienced, particularly with weight gain. I found myself getting frightened about what lay ahead and started doing a lot of research.
Something inside told me I could minimize most negative effects with the right diet and exercise. That's when I began getting more serious about cleaning up my diet. Not long after that, I hightailed it back to Weight Watchers and got serious about sticking with a healthy lifestyle for the long run.
Do I have more work to do? Absolutely. But, I feel like I've laid a good foundation.
What does this have to do with Dr. Weil's bulletin about weight loss success after menopause?
Well, in it he touted results from a study of obese and overweight post-menopausal women that was published in the September 2012 Issue of the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The study followed over 400 women to determine what worked best for losing weight.
What did the study determine were the secrets to losing weight?
Are you ready? (Hold onto your hat, this may shock you, though I hope and pray it doesn't...) According to the study's results, to lose weight menopausal women should:
- Replace meat and cheese with fruits and vegetables
- Keep a food journal
- Eat fewer desserts
- Drink fewer sugary beverages
Seriously? Are you shocked? Amazed? (See why I smiled and let out that sigh 🙂 )
I realize that getting back to Weight Watchers and seriously committing to the PointsPlus Program, with its good health guidelines and focus on 0 PointsPlus fruits and vegetables was one of the best things I could have done to set myself up for successfully managing my health and weight during menopause!
