Peter's Papaya Smoothie
Visit the tropics with this simple, smooth and creamy papaya smoothie recipe.
Papayas seem like the type of fruit you either love or hate. I happen to love them and they're very good for you too!
This fruit contains an enzyme - papain - that aids in digestion. And, they are great sources of antioxidants like vitamin C, carotenes, flavonoids and a good source of folate (or folic acid), fiber, magnesium and potassium. Among many other nutrients.
Many people just discard them after scooping them out, but the round black seeds are edible. But beware, they are rather bitter and somewhat peppery.
Native to Central America, the papaya grows on trees and is produced year round, with peaks during the summer and fall.
It is believed that the legendary explorer, Christopher Columbus, referred to the papaya as "the fruit of the angels."
