Have you tried Culvers Strawberry Salad?

I did on Friday and all I can say is YUM! But is it a healthy lunch option?

That depends…

For the past several Fridays, my mom and I have been going to the mall for a brisk walk & talk followed by lunch. It’s something we both look forward to. One thing we share in common is our love of good food.

This week I suggested Culver’s for lunch.

I first discovered Culver’s when I lived in Wisconsin. Known for their ButterBurgers and incredible fresh frozen custard, Culvers food is not “light” by any stretch. The menu is heavy on hearty midwestern comfort food.

But the ingredients are much higher quality than your typical fast food. And they have a few tasty freshly made salads. And every once in a while I allow myself a creamy custard fix ๐Ÿ™‚

The Culvers Strawberry Salad is a delicious combination of crisp salad greens with chunks of warm grilled chicken, grape tomatoes, fresh sliced strawberries, bleu cheese crumbles, and lightly salted pecans served with a fat free raspberry vinaigrette. Greens, fruit, cheese, nuts and chicken are a winning salad combination in my book!

Culvers Strawberry Salad Ingredients and Nutriton

The ingredients list is surprisingly short, always a good sign:

  • Pecans: Pecans roasted in vegetable oil, salt
  • Blue Cheese Crumbles: Pasteurized milk, cheese culture, salt, enzymes, powdered cellulose (to prevent caking), natamycin (preservative)
  • Grape Tomatoes
  • Fresh Strawberries
  • Boneless Skinless Grilled Chicken Breast: with rib meat, water, modified corn starch, sea salt, sodium phosphates
  • Heritage Salad Blend: Blend of Mixed Greens, including Lolla Rosa (multi-leaf), Red Flash Red Oak, Red Leaf (multi-leaf), Green Oak, and Bally Hoo Tango

The salad has 390 calories, 22 g fat, 4 g fiber, 10 g carbs, 40 g protein and *10 Weight Watchers PointsPlus.

A review of Culver’s Nutrition Information revealed that nearly half the calories (200) and fat (20 g) were from the pecans, a healthy source.

So if you need a salad with fewer calories, skip the pecans or ask for them on the side and just add a few!! The salad without pecans has just 240 calories and *6 Weight Watchers PointsPlus.

Confession: I ate the salad and all the nuts. I love nuts and these were fresh and delicious and worth every calorie! I consider this Culver’s Strawberry Salad a healthy lunch option. The custard I had after the salad, is a whole other matter…

Do you consider this Culver’s Strawberry salad healthy? Do you have a favorite restaurant salad?

It can be tricky to make the most healthy decisions when eating out, without a little pre-planning. The good news is that many more restaurants are posting nutritional information and offering lighter healthier options.

So, eating better when out and about is getting easier all the time!
