I love a good margarita, I’m not going to deny it. But as anyone who as ever been on Weight Watchers knows, margaritas are “expensive” at 5 PointsPlus for just 4 ounces.

So, when the folks at SmarteRita contacted me recently about taking part in their “Get Waisted” Challenge, I immediately said yes.

What is SmarteRita? A new brand of low calorie ready-to-drink margarita targeted at both men and women. With just 100 calories in 4 ounces it seemed worth a try.

Just in time for Cinco de Mayo I received a margarita glass along with a bottle of both SmarteRita and Skinny Girl Margaritas to taste compare.

I purchased the Skinny Girl once last year but didn’t like the way it tasted. It was way too bitter with an “off” flavor that I can’t quite explain, so I was really hoping SmarteRita would taste better.

When I read the ingredients label on the SmarteRita I was a little bummed. It contains sucralose (Splenda), an artificial sweetener I try to avoid because it’s been known to give me headaches. But I decided to give it a taste anyway.

So on Sunday, Rod and I conducted our own little margarita taste-test.

The winner?

It was unanimous. Both Rod and I preferred the SmarteRita. It was sweeter than the Skinny Girl, but not too sweet and tasted the way I think a margarita should.

If you are in the market for a ready-made low calorie margarita, I think it’s worth giving SmarteRita a try.

How to Make Your Own SmarteRita Skinny Margarita

You might also want to consider making your own skinny margarita, which is what I like to do. Just take a tall glass and fill it with ice. Add a shot of clear tequila and then top with club soda. Add a splash of orange flavored liqueur (I like Cointreau) and 3 or 4 lime wedges. For a little more sweetness, you could add agave or your favorite sweetener.
