I just finished a great weekend of yoga in Phoenix with Yoga master Erich Schiffman, who refers to his yoga as 'freedom style.'
Close to 100 people gathered in Phoenix College's gym to share two days of yoga, meditation and Erich's message, which is in total alignment with my nourishing-yoga philosophy.
Here are a few golden nuggets of wisdom distilled from his lifetime of yoga study and personal practice:
- Yoga asana (poses) shouldn't hurt.
- Explore the options and choices of each pose.
- Stay in your comfort zone. Slow down and back off as necessary. With time and exploration your comfort zone will expand.
- Try to be as relaxed as you can be in the poses. Let go of struggle.
- Do only enough yoga so you want to do more.
- Yoga is the means to getting into stillness so you can tap into infinite wisdom. It is the reason for doing yoga.
He described connecting with your source using the analogy that we are like a computer hard drive with limited information based on our individual experience.
When we live our lives from our individual hard drives our decisions and insights are limited.
Infinite wisdom is like the internet.
We have the ability to tap into or link up with the internet and gain access to infinite information allowing for better decisions and a more expansive life.
Relaxation and meditation are the tools for connecting with Infinite wisdom and repetition of practice is crucial.
He encouraged us to make getting quiet and listening for guidance from 'big mind' a priority in our lives.
I distilled his advice into a mantra that I am now using daily, "Today I will make all my decisions in silent counsel with the infinite because it is the wise thing to do."
