How do we cultivate healthy habits and make positive changes in our lives?
We have two options: we can let go of something that isn’t working or we can introduce something new that will.
For example we can stop (or severely limit) our consumption of french fries or we can commit to eating an extra serving of fruits and veggies every day.
Either choice results in a more nourished diet.
To stay balanced it may be helpful to give up something unhealthy and replace it with a better choice, like substituting a side salad for french fries when eating out.
To be successful we must create space for change, freeing up time and energy to engage in new behaviors. Many of us are completely over-scheduled living on automatic pilot, moving frenetically through our days engaging in the same activities and thoughts, doing the same things over and over even though they aren’t working.
One definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result. How many of us are doing just that, maybe without even realizing it--eating the same foods hoping to lose weight or expecting to feel energized while never taking time to exercise?
To change we first have to notice what isn’t working or what we want to be different. Then we must consciously commit to thinking and behaving differently. Paying attention and making small changes can help move us in the direction of our deepest desires. We don’t need to overwhelm ourselves with too much all at once.
Each day is a new opportunity to begin again; but we can only build momentum by getting started. I encourage you to begin where you are. What do you want less of? What do you want more of? How will you begin to cultivate it?
