Listening When Your Body is Talking to You
Video transcript:
Hi everyone!
So what I'd like to spend a few minutes talking about today is the whole concept of your body talking to you. Do you realize that your body talks to you?
How does it talk to you? Can you give some examples?
Sometimes we tend to override what our body is telling us and I believe our bodies are always talking to us.
If we feel good, our body is telling us that life is pretty good and we're taking care of ourselves.
If we are not feeling good—and this is really one that's come up for me and it took me a while to figure this out.
But I arew up in a family where we tended to eat to excess. We ate to the point of discomfort.
And so a bellyache is your body's way of telling you that you've eaten too much.
Belching... Burping... Cramps... I know, and these are things I've experienced in my life. Having to undo your pants at the end of a meal because you're so bloated.
Heartburn... I mean downing Tums is fine, you want get more comfortable, but it might be really helpful to just pause and say well wait a minute, I don't just want to down the Tums. If I'm having heartburn, that's my body's way of saying I'm eating something that doesn't agree with me.
And I think it can be really beneficial if we start to pause and kind of listen to those symptoms that our body is sharing with us.
Headaches... again, our body is trying to tell us something. Maybe we're too stressed. Maybe we're not getting enough sleep.
So, I would encourage all of us when we are experiencing symptoms—we might have to take the medicine to relieve them—but at the same time, again, pause, take a breath and ask what's going on. What's my body trying to tell me?
Just pause, take a moment, and something is going to come up for you. Oh my gosh, I've sort of noticed this trend that every time I eat cheese, I feel miserable.
You'll start to make these connections that can be really helpful in you feeling better. And, potentially eating less, because I think in our world we tend to eat to excess before we even realize it.
