Preheat your oven to 350F degrees. Grease an 8-inch square baking pan with nonstick cooking spray or shortening and set it aside.
In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt until well blended and set it aside.
In a medium size saucepan, melt the butter on low heat. Remove from the heat and with a whisk or wooden spoon, stir in the brown sugar, vanilla, milk and egg until creamy and well blended.
Add the flour mixture and stir until just combined then stir in up to 1 cup total of any optional additions.
Spread batter into the prepared pan.
Bake 20-25 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out almost clean.
Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack.
Cut into 16 squares.
