Do you like rich brownies? Do you like Oreos? Do you like the sound of combining them into over-the-top outrageous brownies?
If you answered yes, you’ll want to give these outrageous oreo brownies a try.
Sometimes it’s possible to improve on the classics by combining them into something new and wonderful yet comforting and familiar all at the same time. And leave it to Ina Garten, of Barefoot Contessa fame to do it in a big way!
When I got the idea to combine oreos and brownies, a quick search of the web revealed that she had published a recipe for Outrageous Oreo Crunch Brownies in the July 2003 Issue of O Magazine.
Since then several wonderful food blogs including Cookie Madness, Culinary in the Country, Eat Me Delicious, and Cookies on Friday and countless recipe sites have followed suit, either with Ina’s exact recipe or variations of it. It’s hard to argue with success!
Ina’s Outrageous Oreo Crunch Brownie recipe is a variation of her recipe for Outrageous Brownies published in her original The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook, where she gives credit for her inspiration to the SoHo Charcuterie Cookbook and its recipe for Chocolate Globs.
Ina’s recipe makes a huge (12×18-inch pan) of Oreo brownies, not necessarily a bad thing. But since my family is small, I opted to divide the recipe in half and bake them in a 9 x 13-inch pan instead. (That’s why some of the amount look a bit strange – i.e. 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons of sugar.)
I live with a couple of Oreo lovers who gave these brownies a strong thumbs up. However, they require some advanced planning since they are best cooled and then chilled in the refrigerator before cutting and serving.
If you’re short on time, you can always make a batch of Easy Oreo Brownies instead. Just stir 1 to 2 cups of chopped Oreo cookies into your favorite prepared box of brownie mix before baking. Most people love brownies and don’t care if they began in a box.
The Barefoot Contessa Outrageous Brownie Mix tastes like brownies from scratch and is available at many specialty shops and high end grocery stores. I also like Ghirardelli Chocolate Brownie Mix
, which is more widely available and less expensive.
