Do we really wear only 20 percent of our clothes 80 percent of the time? It seems hard to believe, but studies say it’s true for most of us.

How many of your clothes have been languishing in your closet for years? Do you have items with the tags still on them? I am guilty on both counts. Who hasn’t made an impulsive clothing purchase they’ve later regretted?

Does our clutter make us fat? Simplification and organization expert Peter Walsh thinks so. This is the topic of his book, Does This Clutter Make My Butt Look Fat?: An Easy Plan for Losing Weight and Living More.

He makes a strong case for the link between excess stuff and excess body weight. “As a society we keep getting fatter and fatter and our stuff keeps getting bigger and bigger from the size of our burgers and fries to the size of our houses and cars. We keep filling ourselves up inside and out with more and more stuff.”

I have been an avid reader of Janet Luhrs’ Simple Living newsletter for years. It began back in the late 1990s when I read her book, The Simple Living Guide, a thoughtful practical guide for how to simplify our busy lives and live more deliberately. According to lawyer turned simple living advocate and writer Luhrs, living simply is not about being frugal, living on a tight budget, or a modest income; it’s about being fully aware of what we’re doing and why we’re doing it so we can have lives that nourish us.

The 21 Day Challenge–No Complaining for 21 Days!

I am reading a new book, The Four Spiritual Laws of Prosperity: A Simple Guide to Unlimited Abundance by Edwene Gaines, in which she suggests you take a 21 day break from gossiping, complaining, and criticizing to really open yourself up to new possibilities. She calls it a life changing exercise and substantiates this with personal experience. Talk about simplifying your life! I feel lighter and freer just thinking about it!
