I'm a creature of habit. I don't change course quickly or easily. Ask anyone who knows me well.
I also like to stick with what I know, what I feel competent doing.
So, here on Simple Nourished Living for the past several years I've been sharing topics I'm comfortable with: healthy cooking, Weight Watchers friendly recipes, basic weight loss tips, with the occasional yoga article, product and book review.
I'd found a comfortable rhythm and everything was good.
The Essential Oil Wave
Then in February something unexpected happened. Peter and I attended our first bloggers conference and got caught up in this huge Essential Oils wave.
Since we got back I've been experimenting with essential oils, incorporating them into my daily life:
- breathing in peppermint oil first thing in the morning to energize me,
- rubbing peppermint and frankincense oil (affiliate link) onto my feet early in the day,
- diffusing citrus oil into the air to lift my spirits,
- adding lemon oil to my water to make it taste better and take advantage of all its health properties,
- rubbing oil into achey joints/muscles,
- adding grapefruit oil to my water to alleviate cravings and regulate metabolism,
- dabbing oil onto my wrists each morning. It's supposed to interact with the unique individual chemistry of each person to create a unique fragrance designed to to impart beauty, femininity and allure. (Who doesn't want more beauty, femininity and allure at this age?)
- rubbing lavender onto the bottoms of our feet to support restful sleep.
And I'm really just getting started. There are so many oils I want to begin experimenting with, especially in the kitchen.
I haven't been this excited in a very long time because I believe that essential oils align so well with what I believe about health and wellness.

I would love to hear how the oils can help my arthritic feet, my poor sleep, and of course how they can help my weight loss efforts! Thank you!

I have to say, I have been following this blog for a while now and I am very discouraged by this post. Not that you have started using oils, I love my oils, but that you are jumping on the ingestion bandwagon. And I know what most DT reps will say, but DT oils are pure and safe to ingest. I'm sorry, but I have personally experienced negative reaction to ingesting lemon oil, so you can't tell me it's safe. If you are told not to use plastic to drink your water when you use oils in it because it will eat the plastic, what in the world do you think it's doing to your insides? And no, oils cannot tell the difference between plastic and your internal organs. Oils, no matter how pure are not safe to ingest unless you are under the care of a certified aromatherapist and even then I would say it's still not safe. They are a powerful tool to help you feel better, but should be used safely. I just wish more people would do research for themselves before using oils rather than listening to the marketing BS that you get from MLM distributors.

Hi Merica,
Thanks for your thoughtful comments. I would never tell anyone to use oils in a way they don't feel comfortable with. I believe it's a personal decision. If you prefer to use essential oils only aromatically or topically, then by all means, that is what you should do. I will never try to convince you otherwise. I believe that we should always act in accordance with our beliefs. I also believe that we are each entitled to our own beliefs.

I signed up for recipes. Some essential oil companies certainly have somewhat sketchy reputations. I think I would get medical advice elsewhere.

Hi Debra,
We will still be supplying recipes, something we've been doing for free for more than 7 years. It's possible to make money sharing/selling essential oils and products with others. We're okay with that 🙂

Nope, nothing wrong with that, everyone needs to make a living. it's nice to know if something is being recommended for profit or not. You know like in magazines when they put ADVERTISEMENT at the top of a page.

I'm definitely interested in your uses of Essential Oils. Funny how things come together sometimes. I just discovered your blog and am excited to try your weight watcher recipes and advice on weight loss. I started using Essential Oils a couple of months ago and am really enjoying them. I find them very beneficial and think they are great for personal health and well being. I love the Lavender, Peppermint and Lemon Oils. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge.
